Welcome

The word photograph derives from the Greek words phōtos or 'light' and graphé or 'drawing'. I love the idea of wondering around and drawing what I see with light!  This gallery is where I hope that the best of my developing collection of these 'drawings' are displayed.

The great photographer, Henri Cartier-Bresson, who described his camera as his sketch book, wrote: 'Your first 10,000 photographs are your worst.'  The famous landscape photographer Ansel Adams was reported to have said that 'Twelve significant photographs in any one year is a good crop.'  I'm not sure I like the odds here - but to give myself a challenge and save your browser, I have tried to restrict myself to twelve photographs in each of the collections within the gallery. Some may have more while I sort them but the intention is to only have twelve when I'm done. I have, of course, cheated. A wider range of photographs, some of which may resonate with you in the way that only local, travel or abstract photography can, can be found on my other website (www.maltingsart.com). Both sites are still under development so please be patient with me!

To quote another great photographer, Don McCullin: 'Photography for me is not looking, it's feeling. If you can't feel what you're looking at, then you're never going to get others to feel anything when they look at your pictures.'
